CreaTeME Workshop at PUNKT: Students were introduced to Nils Petter Molvær and Alva Notos creative processes

Students at UiArytmisk recently had the unique opportunity to participate in a workshop at Aladdin Scene in Kristiansand, led by two world-renowned artists: Nils Petter Molvær, the 2024 Punkt Artist in Residence, and Carsten Nicolai, also known as Alva Noto. This workshop was an extraordinary fusion of music, art, and science, offering students an immersive experience into the innovative processes of these two creators.

Nils Petter Molvær, a Norwegian trumpet player, composer, and producer, is celebrated for his ability to blend multiple music genres—jazz, ambient, electronic, and beyond—into evocative soundscapes. His music captures a broad spectrum of emotions and environments, from the cold expanse of polar ice to the heat of desert sands. Molvær’s distinctive style, deeply influenced by Scandinavian nature and artists like Miles Davis, has made him a leading figure in modern jazz, with a sound that is both uniquely his own and universally resonant.

Carsten Nicolai, who performs under the pseudonym Alva Noto, is a German artist and musician whose work exists at the intersection of art, music, and science. Nicolai is known for his minimalist aesthetic and his ability to transform scientific phenomena into sensory experiences that engage both sight and sound. His work often involves complex mathematical patterns and self-organizing structures, which he translates into his music through electronic soundscapes that push the boundaries of traditional composition.

During the workshop, students were introduced to Molvær’s and Nicolai’s creative processes, gaining insights into how they merge disparate elements into cohesive, powerful performances. This experience was not only an education in technique but also an inspiration for the students to explore the boundaries of their own artistic practices.
