Upcoming event at the 12th of September: Artistundersøkelen (The Performing Artist Survey) will be launched at Bylarm on September 12th

The working conditions and financial situation of artists and musicians in popular music have not been mapped in Norway since 2015, and The Performing Artist Survey will now provide answers to a number of questions about life as a performer. The Performing Artist Survey  is the first of its kind in Norway and will be launched during this year’s Bylarm festival on Thursday, September 12th.

How much of Norwegian artists’ income is spent on production costs? How many Norwegian artists today struggle with mental health challenges as a result of career choices and lifestyle? How important do Norwegian artists consider awards such as the Spellemann Prize and industry festivals like by

and Trondheim Calling? These are some of the issues and questions that the survey sheds light on.

The Performing Artist Survey  is a quantitative study with over 400 Norwegian artists as respondents. The survey is conducted by GramArt – the artists’ own organization – and the newly established CreaTeME at the University of Agder. CreaTeME (Centre for Excellence in Creative Use of Technologies in Music Education) has already become one of Norway’s leading centers of expertise on topics in the music industry. The Performing Artist Survey  2024 is the first edition of the survey, and the first of its kind in Norway. It is planned that the survey will be conducted regularly in the coming years.

– We will carry the insights from the survey forward in research and development within the music industry. Since this will be a regular survey, we will also obtain reliable data over time and be able to observe developments in the field. Thus, the survey can also be used to evaluate the various measures from the ministries, support systems, and others who have influence over artists’ economy, says Daniel Nordgård, professor at the University of Agder, director of CreaTeME, and board member of GramArt.

The data from the survey will be available at artistundersokelsen.no after the launch at Bylarm
, where all interested parties can explore the details and use the information as a reliable source for research, political processes, or industry development. The portal will serve as a source of data for anyone who wants to understand the economic, social, and artistic conditions artists live under and how sustainable the music industry is perceived by those at the heart of it.

The Performing Artist Survey  2024 will be an important topic at this year’s Bylarm and Daniel Nordgård (UiA/CreaTeME) will present key issues and highlight the findings and their implications for the future of Norwegian artists. The launch will take place on Thursday, September 12th during this year’s by
festival, and the survey will be published publicly on the same day.
