CreaTeME presents KRS Open: A Gathering for Music Business Students

Welcome to the KRS Open: A Gathering for Music Business Students

The KRS Open returns for its second year in Kristiansand, Norway, as an exclusive, invite-only event designed specifically for music business students. With a format that encourages open dialogue and anonymity under Chatham House Rule, the KRS Open creates a safe space for attendees to discuss the music industry’s most pressing topics without fear of attribution.

This year’s event spans two days, bringing together 40-50 master’s students from across Europe, faculty, and a select few industry guests. The format includes presentations, guided workshops (referred to as “Hive Minds”), group discussions, and collaborative conclusions. Seating is arranged in a horseshoe or United Nations-style setup to facilitate engagement and foster an inclusive environment.

Location and Accommodation
The event is hosted at Hartmanns Brygge, a scenic venue located on the waterfront in Kristiansand’s vibrant arts district. Participants will stay at Thon Partner Hotel Parken, conveniently situated within a short walk from both the bus station and venue. Kristiansand, Norway’s fifth-largest city, offers attendees an inviting mix of coastal charm and artistic energy. In November, the city can be chilly and rainy, so warm clothing and umbrellas are recommended.

Event Structure

The KRS Open is organized around four thought-provoking topics spread across two days. Each topic follows a structured progression:

  • Video Introduction by UiA students to set the stage.
  • Case Study or Guest Reaction to bring real-world insight.
  • Hive Mind Workshop – an interactive brainstorming session where attendees work in small groups to explore solutions.
  • Group Discussion and Conclusion to wrap up findings.
  • Schedule Highlights

Day 1 dives into the challenges of generating income in the live music industry, featuring insights from Jess Partridge of EMMA (UK). Later, Julie Forchammer from Klimakultur (NO) addresses the intersection of art and environmental responsibility. The evening closes with a live concert, showcasing artists from Sibelius Academy, Westminster University, and the University of Agder.

Day 2 explores alternative ways for artists to connect with fans without an overwhelming focus on social media, with guidance from Malena Wolfer of Pockets (UK). The final topic delves into the controversial trend of catalog sales and the importance of artists maintaining control over their music. A student-led activity in the afternoon and a mixer with the Roundtable Conference will conclude the event, providing networking opportunities and a relaxed setting for further discussion.

The KRS Open Experience

The KRS Open embodies a collaborative approach, designed to empower the next generation of music industry professionals with the tools, insights, and networks they need to succeed. Through open dialogue, practical workshops, and a blend of academic and industry perspectives, the event offers students a rare opportunity to engage deeply with critical issues facing today’s music industry in an immersive, supportive environment.
