With over 400 Norwegian artists participating, the survey delivers detailed insights into the everyday challenges and triumphs faced by performers. It addresses crucial issues such as financial sustainability, the mental health struggles associated with their careers, and the role of industry recognition through awards like the Spellemannprisen.
Pressing Concerns: Financial Pressure and Mental Health
A primary finding from the survey reveals that a significant portion of artists’ income is directed toward production costs, leaving many performers struggling to make ends meet. Rising costs in an already competitive industry have placed mounting financial pressure on artists, forcing them into tough decisions about their careers and future projects.
In addition to financial stress, the survey highlights the mental health challenges facing artists. Many performers experience mental health issues stemming from career instability, economic uncertainty, and lifestyle demands. The study shines a light on how economic insecurity and societal expectations contribute to these difficulties, emphasizing the need for greater support.
The Value of Industry Recognition
Despite these challenges, Norwegian artists still place a high value on industry recognition. The survey found that awards such as the Spellemannprisen and industry festivals like Bylarm and Trondheim Calling continue to play an important role in shaping artists’ careers and public visibility. These platforms provide a crucial boost to the credibility and opportunities available to performers.
Organized by GramArt and CreaTeME
“Artistundersøkelsen” was conducted by GramArt, Norway’s largest artists’ organization, in collaboration with CreaTeME (Centre for Excellence in Creative Use of Technologies in Music Education) at the University of Agder. CreaTeME, which has quickly become one of Norway’s leading research centers on music industry issues, undertook this project as part of its ongoing commitment to understanding the evolving conditions of the music world.
According to Daniel Nordgård, professor at the University of Agder and director of CreaTeME, this survey will be a valuable resource for the future of the industry.
“The insights from the survey will inform our ongoing research and development in the music industry. Since this will be a regular survey, we will also gather reliable data over time and track developments in the field. The survey can be used to evaluate government measures and other support mechanisms that impact artists’ finances and well-being,” Nordgård said.
A Resource for the Industry and Beyond
The findings from the Artistundersøkelsen 2024 are now publicly available at artistundersokelsen.no. The website offers an open platform for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals to delve into the results, providing a reliable resource for understanding the economic, social, and artistic conditions artists face. Over time, this database will grow as new surveys are conducted, offering critical insights into the sustainability of the music industry.
Presentation at Bylarm 2024
Yesterday at 11:00 AM, Daniel Nordgård presented the key findings from the Artistundersøkelsen at Bylarm
2024. His presentation focused on the implications of the results for the future of Norwegian artists, exploring how the data can inform decision-making within the industry and contribute to improved conditions for performers.
“Artistundersøkelsen” represents a pivotal moment for Norwegian artists. By highlighting both the struggles and successes of performers, the survey offers a clearer understanding of what it takes to thrive in today’s music industry and sets the stage for future improvements in the lives of Norway’s creative talent.
