High visibility and strong engagement for CreaTeME at Bylarm 2024
At this year’s Bylarm festival, CreaTeME made a significant impact with a series of events that underscored its contributions to music production, education, and research. From immersive audio technology to music industry education and artist sustainability, CreaTeME brought together industry professionals and academics to explore the future of the music landscape.
The Performing Artist Survey Presentation – 12th September
In collaboration with GramArt, CreaTeME was instrumental in presenting the findings of the Artist Survey, which shed light on how Norwegian musicians earn their income and the challenges they face. This study provided a comprehensive overview of the state of artist livelihoods in Norway, offering industry stakeholders concrete data on how to better support musicians.
GramArt, Norway’s oldest and most experienced artist organization, partnered with CreaTeME to present the survey. Their combined efforts highlighted the importance of academic research in informing policy and industry practices, ensuring that musicians receive the support they need to sustain their careers.
CreaTeME Reception – 12th September
CreaTeME kicked off its participation in Bylarm with a reception on the 12th of September, held at Matsalen. The event provided an excellent opportunity for both new and experienced players in the music industry to mingle and learn about CreaTeME’s ongoing projects and future plans. During the reception, light refreshments were served, and CreaTeME representatives offered insights into their innovative work combining technology and music education. The event aimed to foster connections between academia and the broader music industry, highlighting the center’s commitment to enhancing music education through cutting-edge technological tools.
Creative Use of ATMOS in Music Production – 13th September
The conversation around technology in music production took center stage on the 13th of September with the event, Creative Use of ATMOS in Music Production. As immersive audio technologies, such as ATMOS, continue to redefine how music is created and consumed, this panel examined its influence on the creative process. With streaming services increasingly offering immersive mixes and classic repertoires being remixed into ATMOS formats, producers, songwriters, and artists are adapting their workflows to the new possibilities this technology offers.
Moderated by Javed Kurd of Gateway Studios, the panel featured music producer Eivind Helgerød, Grammy-nominated producer Morten Lindberg, and CreaTeME researcher and artist Ingvild Koksvik. Together, they discussed how immersive audio affects creativity, collaboration, and audience engagement.

Does Songwriting and music production education matter? – A Panel Discussion – 13th September
A second major event featuring CreaTeME was a panel discussion on whether formal music education is still relevant in today’s industry. With some claiming that aspiring artists and producers can learn all they need from YouTube tutorials, the discussion, moderated by Professor Anne Danielsen from the University of Oslo, explored the role of structured education in a rapidly evolving music industry.
Panelists included Alexander Austheim, Head of EMI and Creative Director at Universal Music Norway, Tuva Syvertsen, a well-known musician and songwriter, and Askil Holm, First Lecturer at the University of Agder’s Institute of Popular Music. The conversation highlighted how education programs are not only providing valuable knowledge but also helping to address gender imbalances in the industry. Holm contributed valuable insights into how structured education empowers artists, particularly female musicians, and the potential this has for reshaping the industry.
