Abstract – The skills to pay the bills – new digital skills in a digital and global music market:

Digital transitions and new online platforms have provided business model innovations and disruptions in the creative industries (Li, 2020) and the music industries (Wikström and DeFilippi, 2016). Digital change comes with both opportunities and challenges when it comes to sourcing and supporting creative talent in the global music industry. This chapter builds on our work with CreaTeME, a newly established Center of Excellence in the creative use of technology in music education. Here, we analyze the skills needed to succeed and prosper in a rapidly changing global music industry for artists and songwriters by analyzing the case of popular music programs at the University of Agder, in Kristiansand, Norway. The findings will contribute to the assessment of music educational programs and help to better understand digital change through the lens of labor market and implications within the education system.
