New “When I” video episodes: Dialogues on Songwriting with Tone Åse – Artistic Research in Popular Music

On November 9–10, 2023, the research group Songwriting and Production at the Faculty of Fine Arts, in collaboration with CreaTeME, hosted a two-day symposium titled Dialogues on Songwriting: Creativity, Methods and Contexts at the University of Agder. The program consisted of presentations and panel discussions on various questions and topics related to songwriting, production, and research.

In a panel titled Songwriting in Arts and Research, Tone Åse, Harpreet Bansal, and Torun Eriksen discussed the challenges of conducting artistic research on songwriting within a popular music context. In two videos filmed during the panel, Tone Åse—an improvisational musician and professor of music at NTNU—discusses the challenges of integrating the experimental methods of artistic research into traditionally non-experimental genres and examines the differences between artistic and scientific research. One of the videos also features excerpts from her performance of her musical work Are you still disappointed?.
