The symposium Dialogues on Songwriting: Creativity, Methods, and Contexts brought together some of the most influential voices in the field for a panel discussion on “Songwriting, Performance, and Production.” Held at Kraftverk/BARE Studenthus, November 9–10, 2023, and hosted by the Songwriting and Production research group at the University of Agder’s Faculty of Fine Arts in collaboration with CreaTeME.
The panel featured songwriter and producer Martin Sjølie, Professor of Musicology Anne Danielsen, and Professor of Popular Music Eirik Askerøi. Together, they unpacked the nuances of the songwriting process, focusing on creativity, collaboration, and the interplay of roles in music creation.
Martin Sjølie, known for his work with artists like Sigrid and Maria Mena, emphasized the importance of what each contributor brings to the room during a collaborative session. “It’s not just about musical skill but also about creating an atmosphere where ideas can flourish,” he remarked. Sjølie discussed how collaboration often requires balancing emotional intelligence with technical expertise, creating a dynamic that fosters trust and openness.
Anne Danielsen brought a theoretical lens to the discussion, exploring how performance and production intersect with songwriting in contemporary music. Eirik Askerøi complemented this with insights into how historical and cultural contexts shape both the creative process and the reception of music.
The discussion highlighted how songwriting is more than just assembling melodies and lyrics; it’s a complex interaction between individuals, tools, and environments. This multi-dimensional approach resonated with the diverse audience, which included students, researchers, and industry professionals.
The symposium underscored the growing importance of academic discourse in bridging the gap between artistic practice, research and education, offering new perspectives on creativity and collaboration in songwriting.
