Re–Creation Avetis: Armenian Folk Music Reimagined Through Live Electronics

The album Re–Creation Avetis by pianist Mariam Kharatyan brings together Armenian folk and sacred music, improvisation, and live electronics in a unique artistic collaboration. Recorded at the University of Agder, the project explores how traditional melodies can be reinterpreted through contemporary performance practices and immersive audio technologies.

The album features Kharatyan on piano, Armenian folk musician Vigen Balasanyan on duduk and blul, and Alessandra Bossa on live electronics and voice. Together, they create a musical dialogue where centuries-old Armenian melodies meet improvisation, sampling, remixing, and spatial sound design.

Re–Creation Avetis represents a unique interdisciplinary collaboration between the Department of Classical Music and Music Education, the Electronic Music programme, and CreaTeME at the University of Agder. The project combines artistic research, folk music traditions, classical performance, improvisation, and cutting-edge music technology to create new forms of artistic expression.

The album was made possible through support from CreaTeME and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Agder, demonstrating how collaboration across artistic disciplines can generate innovative research and artistic outcomes. The project highlights CreaTeME's ambition to foster creative encounters between technology, performance, and artistic practice.

“Folk music embodies the accumulated wisdom of people — a reflection of human emotion, memory, and the historical and cultural journey of a nation. Passed down orally through generations, these songs naturally transform over time; mobility and reinterpretation are essential elements of the tradition.

In Re-Creation, I wanted to remain aligned with the spirit of the folk musician’s tradition — the vitality of music as a living, transforming organism that evolves with each performer.

Together with Vigen and Alessandra, we explore Armenian folk and spiritual melodies in trio and duo settings through contrasting musical aesthetics, each version of the same song evolving differently through improvisation and revealing endless musical possibilities. At the core of Re-Creation lies the continuous act of listening and responding — reimagining and re-creating centuries-old music here and now, while remaining deeply rooted in our individual understanding of traditional Armenian music.”  — Mariam Kharatyan
