Successful bass symposium in Kristiansand

Bass symposium with ten professional bass players held in Kristiansand in May 2023.

There are a total of 11 universities and colleges in Norway that offers performance-based curriculums in jazz/pop/rock. In May 2023 the University of Agder’s chair of the bass department, Per Elias Drabløs, invited his colleagues to a lunch-to-lunch bass symposium in Kristiansand. The idea behind this gathering was to get an overview of the methods used in bass tuition in Norway. The main topics included:

  • what kind of technological aids are used?
  • which techniques, styles and genres are emphasized?
  • what kind of knowledge do bass teachers want to be transmitted to present and future bass students?

Ten professional bass players, teaching at the highest educational level in Norway, arrived Campus Gimlemoen at noon May 24th 2023. Through workshops, presentations, and discussions, the outcome is the establishing of a digital toolbox filled with basic knowledge and the methods preferred by the most prolific bass teachers in Norway.
