The results from the Performing Artist Survey 2024 are out now!
The working conditions and finances of artists and musicians within popular music in Norway have not been surveyed since 2015. The Performing Artist Survey will now provide answers to a range of questions about life as a performer. The results from the survey are now available and can be accessed at artistundersokelsen.no
The survey and its findings will be presented today at 11:00 AM at ByLarm

How much of Norwegian artists’ income is spent on production costs? How many Norwegian artists today struggle with mental health issues as a result of their career choices and lifestyle? How important do Norwegian artists consider awards like the Spellemann Award and industry festivals such as by
and Trondheim Calling? These are some of the issues and questions addressed by the survey.
The Artist Survey is a quantitative study with over 400 Norwegian artists as respondents. It was conducted by GramArt – the artists’ own organization – and the newly established CreaTeME at the University of Agder. CreaTeME (Centre for Excellence in Creative Use of Technologies in Music Education) has already become one of Norway’s leading research environments on music industry topics. The Performing Artist Survey 2024 is the first edition of the survey and the first of its kind in Norway. It is planned that the survey will be conducted regularly in the coming years.
– “The insights from the survey will inform our ongoing research and development in the music industry. Since this will be a regular survey, we will also gather reliable data over time and track developments in the field. Thus, the survey can be used to evaluate various measures from the government, support mechanisms, and others who influence artists’ finances,” says Daniel Nordgård, professor at the University of Agder, director of CreaTeME, and board member of GramArt.
The survey data is now available at artistundersokelsen.no. Here, everyone interested can explore the details and use the information as a reliable source for research, political processes, or industry development. The portal is intended to serve as a data source for those who wish to understand the economic, social, and artistic conditions artists live under and how sustainable the music industry is perceived by those within it.
The Artist Survey 2024 will be a key topic at this year’s Bylarm, where Daniel Nordgård (UiA/CreaTeME) will present central issues and highlight the findings and their implications for the future of Norwegian artists. The launch takes place today at 11:00 AM at Bylarm in “Matsalen.”
