On a crisp October evening, the intimate Mainstage at Kraftverk played host to an evening of musical enchantment, courtesy of Egil Kalman and his groundbreaking performance, “Folk Music in Slow Motion.” The event, a part of his ongoing PhD project in artistic research at UiA, aimed to breathe new life into traditional Scandinavian music through the unconventional medium of the modular synthesizer. The result was a mesmerizing fusion of old-world charm and cutting-edge innovation.
Egil Kalman, a visionary in the realm of experimental music, embarked on a journey that defied conventions, exploring the rich tapestry of folk music through the lens of just intonation tunings. His solo performance was a testament to the boundless possibilities of synthesized sound, where acoustic and electronic seamlessly intertwined, creating an otherworldly soundscape that transcended the boundaries of time and tradition.
What made this experience even more extraordinary was the Q&A session that followed that was hosted by University lecturer at UiA and member of the CreaTeME-team Alessandra Bossa. Egil Kalman generously shared insights into his artistic research, shedding light on the intricate process of interpreting traditional music through a modular synthesizer. The audience was captivated by his passion and dedication to preserving the essence of folk music while pushing the boundaries of what is possible with technology.
